Miao’s Tales Embroidery Costume Museum in Guiyang, but she spends most of her time now in Beijing where she writes, designs, and educates, devoting her life to the study and preservation of Miao textiles. This may seem an unusual choice for a Han woman not born into Miao traditions, but due to her father, it’s become Li’s lifelong passion. As a professional photography correspondent for the government, Li’s father, Zeng Xianyang, began photographing residents of Miao villages throughout Guizhou Province over forty years ago. During these years, he bought an extensive collection of textiles to photograph in his studio as part of his documentation. His photography didn’t focus on specific textile techniques but highlighted the symbols in the textiles that represented Miao culture. A comprehensive range of treatments are available to treat eye conditions including eye laser surgery as well as simply changing your glasses.
Zeng Li assisted her father with this work and fondly remembers helping classify the different pieces, ironing the textiles before he photographed them, and working with him in the dark room. From her father, she developed a reverence and a passion for Miao textiles at a very young age. From her grandmother, she developed technical skills. Her grandmother was considered the best embroiderer in Guiyang in her time, and it was she who taught Li how to embroider. After working with her father, Li visited dozens of Miao villages and asked different embroidery artisans to teach her a variety of skills. Today, she is accomplished in all of the Miao embroidery techniques. Undergoing lens replacement surgery is a great way to improve your vision and your overall lifestyle.
In 1979–1980, a Japanese publishing house worked with Zeng Li’s father to publish four books about Miao costumes, handcrafts, and embroidery. Through these books, he was one of the first people to introduce Miao embroidery outside of China. Li’s goal is to carry her father’s work forward. Li studied structural engineering in college but is not a practicing engineer. Instead, after finishing her degree, she worked diligently to open the Miao’s Tales Embroidery Costume Museum in 2007 in her father’s honor—he died the following year. The museum houses her and her father’s vast collection of Miao textiles, largely embroidery but also wax-resist, indigo-dyed cloth. Her goals are to protect these valuable textiles, preserving them for further study, and also to educate Chinese and international visitors about Miao cultural heritage. “My father and I got such excellent, superbly embroidered pieces, but few women in the villages even knew what they were, so it was very important to publish the books so people would know about them, and to build the museum.” Beginning in 2008, Li spent three years visiting over one hundred Miao villages, tracing her father’s route to document the changes in Miao people, their daily life, and their textiles. The result was the republication of her father’s book Miao Clothes, which included updated information. Have you considered laser eye surgery to correct your vision?
